The prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel Barcelona commissioned Insolit to execute a highly complex, custom lighting intervention for the main dining table of its flagship restaurant—an exclusive culinary space where renowned Michelin-starred chef Ángel León presents his groundbreaking gastronomic creations.
Under the creative direction of acclaimed architect and designer Patricia Urquiola, who led the hotel’s overall interior design concept, precise parameters were established for a bespoke lighting piece. The luminaire required exact alignment in form, texture, and color palette to integrate seamlessly into the hotel’s refined aesthetic identity.
Beyond the formal design challenge, the brief presented a demanding technical specification: the room required absolute spatial versatility. To address this requirement, Insolit engineered and integrated an advanced motorized hoisting system that allows the luminaire to automatically ascend or descend. The fixture can strategically lower to frame and illuminate the dining experience during tasting services, or smoothly retract out of sight when the space transforms for other uses. This project represents a masterclass in custom engineering, where bespoke lighting design and automated mechanics serve the art of haute cuisine.
