Designer wall lamps are essential tools for sculpting space through lighting. The placement of a wall light is crucial to ensuring visual comfort and the correct definition of atmosphere. As a general rule in interior design projects, it is recommended to install them at a height of approximately 1.60 to 1.80 metres from the floor, thus avoiding direct glare. However, in spaces with generous ceiling heights or double-height volumes, this level can be raised to wash larger walls. In the case of reading lights next to the bed or study areas, the height should be carefully calculated in relation to the headboard or seat to ensure ergonomic comfort for the user.
In projects where ceiling height is a limiting factor, large-volume luminaires can visually saturate the space. A wall lamp, also known as a wall light or sconce, is a luminaire designed to be mounted directly onto a vertical surface (wall or partition) rather than resting on the floor, a table, or hanging from the ceiling. They are commonly used to provide indirect lighting (washing the wall to create atmosphere), focal or accent light (to highlight textures, works of art, or hallways), or direct reading light. As they occupy no floor or surface space, they are excellent tools both for their technical functionality and for their decorative and architectural value.
As a general rule in residential interior design projects, a wall light is installed at a height of between 1.60 and 1.80 metres from the floor. This measurement aims to position the light source approximately at eye level or slightly above to avoid direct glare. However, this height may vary depending on the context:
In high ceilings or double-height spaces: They can be installed at 2 metres or more.
In long hallways: The standard height (1.60 m – 1.80 m) is recommended, spacing them between 2.5 and 3 metres apart.
In the bedroom, the most common and functional place to position wall lights is in the headboard area or on either side of the bed, replacing traditional bedside table lamps.
Installation height beside the bed: They should be placed at a height of approximately 1.20 to 1.50 metres from the floor (or around 50-75 cm above the mattress), depending on the height of the bed and whether the luminaire provides ambient light or is an adjustable reading spotlight.
The goal is for the light to be easily accessible from the bed and, in the case of reading spotlights, for the beam to point towards the book without casting body shadows or glaring at the person lying beside.
Physically, you can install a wall light on almost any wall, but it is not advisable to do so randomly. Three limiting factors must be taken into account:
Power point and wiring: You need an electrical installation to reach that exact point on the wall (unless you use specific designs that plug into a low-positioned power socket, leaving the cable visible).
Protection (IP Rating): You cannot use just any lamp in damp or outdoor areas. For a bathroom or terrace, the luminaire must have an appropriate protection rating (such as IP44 for damp indoor areas or IP65 to withstand outdoor weather conditions).
Projection and circulation: Bulky wall lights should not be placed in narrow hallways or passageways where people may bump into them. In such cases, low-profile or recessed luminaires are recommended.
