Bathroom mirror lighting: how to choose the perfect light

Of all the lighting in a bathroom, the mirror light is the one used the most — and the one most often got wrong. It is the light you shave by, apply make-up by, look at yourself in first thing in the morning. And yet, in most bathrooms it is resolved with a single overhead light that casts shadows exactly where they should not be: under the eyes, the nose and the chin. Getting bathroom mirror lighting right is not a question of aesthetics: it determines whether you look good or bad every morning.

Why mirror light is the most important light in the bathroom

The most common mistake is lighting the mirror from above, with a spotlight or a ceiling fixture. Overhead light falls vertically onto the face and creates hard shadows in the eye sockets and under the nose. The result is an aged, poorly defined face — the exact opposite of what you want. Correct mirror lighting must come from the sides or from the perimeter of the mirror itself, at face height, to wrap the face in even, shadow-free light.

What to look for in bathroom mirror lighting

• Adequate IP rating: in the washbasin area, a luminaire with protection against moisture is required. The usual standard is IP44, which protects against splashes. Any luminaire installed near water must meet it.
• Frontal or perimeter light, never only overhead: the light source must illuminate the face from the front or from around the mirror to eliminate shadows. A mirror with integrated perimeter light is the most effective solution.
• CRI above 90: essential so that skin and colours look real. A low colour rendering index distorts tones and makes applying make-up or shaving harder.
• Colour temperature 2700–3000 K: warm light flatters the face and creates a welcoming atmosphere. For very technical make-up areas some prefer 3000 K, but never cool light.
• Dimming: being able to dim the light lets you switch from the functional morning light to soft ambient light for a relaxing bath at night.

Focus Line IP 44: the adjustable spotlight for support light in the bathroom

When the bathroom needs an adjustable light point — to accent the mirror from the side, light the shower area or create support light — the Focus Line IP 44 is the solution. It is an adjustable design spotlight in machined aluminium, designed for the bathroom (IP44 – Class II), that takes a replaceable GU10 LED bulb.

How to position the mirror light according to your bathroom

• Mirror with perimeter light (TR Moon): the cleanest and most effective option. The light surrounds the face and you need no additional points. Ideal when the mirror is the focal point of the bathroom.
• Symmetrical side light: if you use a mirror without integrated light, two light points on either side, at eye level (around 160–170 cm from the floor), light the face without shadows.
• Avoid the single overhead point: if there is only one ceiling spotlight above the basin, always complement it with frontal or perimeter light.
• Respect electrical safety zones: in the bathroom there are protection volumes according to distance from water. Always use luminaires with the right IP rating (minimum IP44 near the basin) and consult an installer.
