Decorative lamps in architecture: The balance between sculpture and light

In the world of contemporary interior design and architecture, lighting has ceased to be a mere functional tool to become the fourth pillar of space construction. It is no longer just about seeing, but about feeling the environment. In this context, decorative lamps play a crucial role: they are the objects that dress the air, pieces that keep their character and beauty even when switched off.

For architects, interior designers and specifiers, choosing a decorative luminaire is not a trivial decision. It requires a deep understanding of how materiality, form and LED technology can transform the perception of a volume. At Insolit, we understand that true “decoration” in lighting is born from the honesty of materials —such as machined aluminium or ribbed glass— and from precision in the engineering of light.

Throughout this article, we will explore how to integrate high-end decorative lamps into residential and contract projects, analysing current trends and how our collections respond to the most rigorous technical and aesthetic demands.

The redefinition of the decorative: From ornamentation to technical presence

Historically, there was a clear dividing line between technical lighting (spotlights, tracks, downlights) and decorative lighting (chandeliers, floor lamps with shades). However, modern architecture has blurred these boundaries. Today, a technical luminaire can be deeply decorative thanks to its minimalist design and premium finishes.

The current trend seeks decorative lamps that add personality without saturating the space. The aim is “quiet elegance”. This is where machined aluminium and extruded profiles take centre stage. Unlike mass-produced luminaires in plastic or bent sheet metal, the use of noble materials and precise manufacturing processes gives the piece a visual weight and a tactile quality that the end client perceives immediately.

Suspension as aerial sculpture

Suspension luminaires are often the focal point of a room. In double-height spaces, stairwells or above large dining tables, these decorative lamps must have the ability to fill the void with harmony.

A paradigmatic example of this philosophy is our TR collection. Manufactured in extruded and curved aluminium profile, this series allows total customisation. Models such as the TR Air or the impressive TR Huge are not simple light sources; they are architectural strokes in the air.

  • TR Air: Its lightweight design, supported by tensioners of just 1.6 mm, makes the luminaire appear to float. It is ideal for spaces where visual transparency is to be maintained but an element is needed to define the ceiling height.
  • TR Huge: For large atriums or hotel lobbies, this luminaire offers a monumental presence. As it can be manufactured in a single piece or in sections, it allows architects to draw circles of light in dimensions that few brands can offer.

The ability to integrate direct and indirect light into these pieces (as in the TR Up or TR Spot & Up) adds a layer of technical functionality to their decorative purpose. This is vital in specification: not forcing the client to choose between a beautiful lamp or one that lights well.

Materiality and texture: The resurgence of glass and metal

While minimalism remains relevant, there is a return to texture and material richness in decorative lamps. Designers seek to break the homogeneity of smooth walls with objects that refract light and generate nuances.

The Glass collection by Insolit responds to this need for sophistication. Using ribbed glass tubing, these luminaires create a “liquid” or floating light effect that provides unmatched warmth.

Glass Floor and Glass Table: Timeless elegance

The Glass Floor is a floor lamp that moves away from the conventional. Its steel tube body holds a glass luminous element that seems to levitate. The ribbing of the glass is not only aesthetic; it acts as a natural diffuser that softens the LED emission, avoiding glare and creating an enveloping atmosphere.

The Glass Table, for its part, brings this concept to the work surface or to bedside tables. In luxury hospitality projects, these pieces function as jewels that raise the category of the room. By featuring an integrated dimmer, the user can transition from a working light to an intimate light in seconds.

Decorative portable lighting: Versatility for the Contract sector

The dynamism of today’s spaces, especially in restaurants and hotel terraces, has triggered the demand for portable decorative lamps. However, the market is saturated with low-quality options that do not withstand intensive use.

For a specifier, durability and autonomy are as important as design. Our proposals, such as the Basic and the LC, are manufactured in machined aluminium, which guarantees resistance to knocks and falls far superior to polymer alternatives.

  • Basic: Its name refers to the purity of its lines, not to its features. With a touch switch and USB charging, it is a solid piece that provides accent light perfect for intimate dinners.
  • LC: This luminaire adds a touch of romanticism and dual functionality. It incorporates a candle holder on top with a magnetic lid. This allows the restaurateur to choose between LED technology, the natural light of a candle, or a combination of both, adapting the atmosphere to the event.

Wall compositions: Painting with light and shadows

Plaqué, contemporary wall light designed by Josep Lluís Xuclà for Insolit. Decorative designer wall lighting.

Walls are often the great forgotten ones when planning decorative lamps, relegating wall lights to passage areas or bed headboards. However, a good wall lighting design can replace works of art or paintings.

The concept behind our Plaqué luminaire is precisely that: composition. It is not just a circular wall light; it is a system that allows screens of different depths (30 and 60 mm) to be added around the main light source. This allows the interior designer to create a play of volumes and projected shadows that decorate the wall even when the light is off. It is an ideal solution for lobbies, long hotel corridors or residential living rooms looking for a different focal point.

Likewise, the TR Wall brings the elegance of curved profiles to the wall. Its indirect light bathes the vertical surface, texturing it and visually expanding the space. As it can be installed overlapping different rings, fully customisable luminous murals are created.

The importance of Indirect Light in decoration

We often associate “decorative lamp” with the luminaire that is seen. But at Insolit, we believe that the light that does not come directly from the source is the one that decorates the atmosphere most. Indirect light softens features, eliminates hard shadows and generates comfort.

Here the Inside Tensor stands out. It is a fascinating hybrid piece: a suspension lamp that works visually as a column of light. Thanks to its tensioner and weight on the floor, a perfect vertical line is drawn in the space. Its light is general and indirect, reflecting off the ceiling or nearby walls. The effect is theatrical but subtle. By freeing the floor of bases or tripods (as would happen with a traditional floor lamp), it provides visual cleanliness, something highly valued in minimalist architecture.

In the same way, the LP floor luminaire offers total control over the atmosphere through two independent potentiometers: one for the indirect ambient light towards the wall and another for the focal light towards the ceiling. It is a light “sculpting” tool.

Personalisation: True luxury in decorative lighting

As manufacturers based in Barcelona, one of our greatest strengths is the capacity for customisation. We understand that every architecture project has a unique DNA, and standard decorative lamps often do not fit the required proportions or finishes.

Do you need the profile of the TR Moon in the bathroom to have a specific diameter to fit the mirror? Are you looking for a finish in a corporate RAL colour for the Focus Line spotlights? Or perhaps a special cable length for a Stick Ceiling on a very high ceiling?

At Insolit, customisation is not an exception, it is the norm. We design our own PCBs (printed circuit boards) to ensure that the quality of light (CRI >90) and the colour temperature are consistent across all luminaires in the project, whether technical or decorative. This is vital: nothing ruins a project more than having different “whites” in the LED strips and in the pendant lamps.

Technical integration in decorative bodies

One aspect that designers value enormously is the maintainability and sustainability of the product. Many decorative lamps on the market integrate the LED in such a way that, if it fails, the entire lamp has to be discarded.

At Insolit we are committed to rationality. Products such as the Focus Line family (in its suspension, table or floor versions) allow the use of replaceable GU10 LED bulbs. This does not detract from the design —the body is still impeccable machined aluminium— but it adds a layer of intelligence and sustainability that the end client appreciates in the long term. In addition, it allows the specifier to choose the exact bulb (angle, temperature, dimming) that the project demands.

Light as the project’s signature

Decorative lamps are the final signature in an interior design project. They are the elements that remain at eye level, those that are touched and experienced most closely. Choosing low-quality or generic-design pieces can detract from brilliant architecture.

At Insolit, we work to offer light tools that match your creativity. Whether through the scenic presence of a TR Huge, the delicacy of a Glass Floor or the versatility of a portable Basic, our goal is for light not only to illuminate, but to move.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a decorative lamp and a technical one?

Although the line is increasingly blurred, technical lighting prioritises function (lux levels, UGR, uniformity) and usually seeks to go unnoticed (recessed fittings, tracks). Decorative lamps, such as our Glass collection or the TR series, are designed to be seen and to be part of the aesthetics of the space, providing character and style as well as light. At Insolit we merge both worlds: decorative aesthetics with technical light quality.

Can Insolit’s decorative lamps be customised?

Absolutely. By designing and manufacturing in Barcelona, we offer a high degree of customisation on most of our products. We can adapt diameters (especially in the TR collection), finishes, cable lengths and colour temperatures so that the luminaire integrates perfectly into your architecture or interior design project.

What colour temperature is recommended for decorative lamps in a home?

For residential environments and relaxation areas in hotels, we recommend a warm colour temperature, generally 2700K. This creates a cosy and intimate atmosphere. If a slightly more neutral or clean light is sought, 3000K is the standard option. All our LED luminaires, such as the Stick Ceiling or the Inside Tensor, offer a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI >90) to ensure that the colours of your project’s materials look real.

Are Insolit’s decorative lamps dimmable?

Yes, the vast majority of our decorative luminaires include dimming options. Models such as the Glass Floor or the Inside Tensor have integrated floor dimmers. In the suspension or wall versions, we offer compatibility with DALI, 1-10V or Triac systems, depending on the model and the installation, so that you can create different lighting scenes according to the time of day.

Do you offer decorative lamps suitable for bathrooms or outdoors?

Yes. For the bathroom, we have decorative options with IP44 protection, such as the TR Moon wall light with integrated mirror. For outdoors, we have designer spotlights and bollards such as the Banus collection or the Focus Line IP 65, which maintain a refined aesthetic while withstanding the elements.
