Floor lamp for reading: functional light with design

Floor lamp for reading: functional light with design

Reading demands a light that most living-room lamps simply do not offer. General ceiling light leaves the book in semi-darkness and casts your own shadow over the page; a warm ambient light invites you to relax but tires the eyes after a few minutes. The floor lamp for reading solves this problem: it provides directed, sufficient and glare-free light exactly where you need it, without giving up the design that makes it part of the space.

At Insolit we design and manufacture in Barcelona floor lamps that understand reading as an activity deserving its own light. From the adjustable spotlight that focuses on the page to the piece that combines focal and ambient light in a single body, every model is conceived to accompany the reading corner. Discover them all in our floor lamp collection.

What a floor lamp for reading needs

Not every floor lamp is suitable for reading. A good reading light must meet several requirements that set it apart from a simple ambient lamp:

  • Directed and adjustable light: the beam must be able to point at the page. An adjustable spotlight is the best solution, as it lets you set the angle according to the position of the armchair.
  • No glare: the light source should not be at eye level or reflect off the paper. Spotlights with anti-glare shields or indirect lights prevent visual fatigue.
  • Correct position: the light should come in from behind the shoulder, so it lights the page without your head casting a shadow over it.
  • High CRI and the right temperature: a colour rendering index above 90 and a temperature between 2700 K and 3000 K offer comfortable, faithful light, ideal for long sessions.
  • Dimming: being able to adjust the intensity lets you use the same lamp for reading with strong light or for creating ambience with soft light.

Insolit floor lamps for reading

These are the three models in our collection that best meet the needs of a reading corner, from the purest function to the piece that combines light and decorative presence.

Focus Line Floor: the floor spotlight that focuses on the page

Focus Line Floor: adjustable floor spotlight, directed light perfect for reading

The Focus Line Floor is the reading floor lamp par excellence. It is a design floor spotlight — available in single or double version — with a machined aluminium body and an AISI 316 stainless steel support. Its directed, adjustable light lets you focus on the page from exactly the angle you need, without wasting light on the rest of the room.

The front ring and rear cap in matt anodised black provide an effective anti-glare shield that protects the eyes during long sessions. The double version lets you combine one spotlight for reading with another to light a second point, making it a complete solution for a reading corner. It includes a cable with a switch for convenient operation.

LP: focal and ambient light in a single minimalist body

LP: dual independent light —focal and ambient— for the reading corner

The LP is the ideal option for anyone who wants a single piece that solves both reading and ambience at once. Made from laser-cut aluminium tube, it combines indirect ambient light towards the wall with indirect focal light towards the ceiling, managed independently by two integrated potentiometers.

This dual emission lets you compose the perfect scene: switch on the focal light to concentrate on reading and leave the soft ambient light in the background, or use only the ambient light to relax. Its minimalist language —a pure aluminium rod— makes it a discreet piece that fits beside any armchair without imposing itself visually.

Glass Floor: sculptural presence for the reading corner

Glass Floor: striped glass tube with foot dimmer, enveloping light for reading and relaxing

For anyone seeking a floor lamp with presence, the Glass Floor brings light and character in equal measure. Made from a striped glass tube with a steel tube body, it creates a floating luminous element that dresses the reading corner in an imposing, elegant way. Its warm, enveloping light, dimmable with a foot dimmer, is perfect for relaxed reading at the end of the day.

Although its light is more ambient than focal, placed beside an armchair it provides a soft clarity that is very pleasant for reading without strain, and when switched off it continues to work as a decorative object. It integrates an LED on a PCB designed by Insolit and is fully customisable. The option for those who understand the reading corner as a design space.

How to position the reading floor lamp

  • Behind and to the side of the shoulder: the ideal position is slightly behind and to one side of the armchair, so the light falls on the page without your head casting a shadow.
  • Spotlight height: with an adjustable spotlight like the Focus Line Floor, place the spotlight above eye level and aim it downward, towards the book.
  • Combine focal and ambient: reading in a dark room with only a spotlight tires the eyes through contrast. Accompany the reading light with soft ambient light, as the LP does in a single piece.
  • Avoid reflections: if you read on a tablet or screen, position the light so it does not reflect off the glass.

Frequently asked questions about floor lamps for reading

What type of floor lamp is best for reading?

The best option is a floor lamp with directed, adjustable light, such as a spotlight. The Insolit Focus Line Floor lets you focus on the page from exactly the angle needed and has an anti-glare shield to prevent visual fatigue. For a complete corner, the LP combines focal and ambient light in a single piece.

Where should I place the floor lamp for reading?

The ideal position is slightly behind and to one side of the armchair, with the light coming in over the shoulder. This way the light falls on the page without your own head casting a shadow. The spotlight should sit above eye level and be aimed downward, towards the book.

What colour temperature is best for reading?

A warm temperature of between 2700 K and 3000 K, combined with a colour rendering index (CRI) above 90, offers comfortable and faithful light for long reading sessions. Cool light can feel aggressive in a relaxing environment such as the living-room reading corner.

Does the reading lamp need to be dimmable?

It is strongly recommended. Dimming lets you use the same lamp with strong light for reading and with soft light to create ambience. Models such as the Glass Floor include a foot dimmer, and the LP has two potentiometers to independently control the focal and ambient light.

Are Insolit floor lamps customisable?

Yes. As Insolit designs and manufactures in Barcelona, it adapts the finishes, dimensions and colour temperature of its floor lamps. This allows the piece to integrate precisely into the project, whether a domestic living room, a hotel suite or a bespoke interior design space.
