Overhead lighting has stopped being merely functional to become the backbone of any high-end interior design project. For architects, interior designers and specifiers, the choice of designer ceiling lamps — understood as those that integrate directly into the architecture without suspension elements — is not a final detail, but a strategic decision that defines the visual hierarchy, the cleanliness of the space and its functionality.
At Insolit, we understand light as just another building material. It is not only about lumens or watts, but about how the luminaire interacts with the ceiling plane, how it integrates into the volumes of the building and how, through customisation, it becomes a unique piece. Throughout this article we analyse the surface, recessed and track solutions that define the best ceiling luminaires on the market today.
Architectural integration: surface vs. recessed
The great challenge professionals face is finding the perfect balance between a luminaire that decorates (surface) and one that disappears (recessed). Designer ceiling lamps must respond to this duality. They must comply with demanding regulations, offer a colour rendering index (CRI) above 90 and guarantee adequate glare control (UGR).
When we design a space — especially in areas with limited heights where a pendant lamp would block the view or the passage — the ceiling acts as a technical canvas. The right choice allows us to gain visual spaciousness and aesthetic cleanliness.
Types of ceiling lighting by project
To correctly structure a lighting project, it is essential to categorise ceiling luminaires by their installation method:
- Surface ceiling fixtures: solutions that bring volume and design without invading the room’s useful height.
- Track systems: maximum flexibility for changing spaces such as retail, galleries or contemporary homes.
- Surface projectors: accent light installed directly on the horizontal plane.
- Recessed (downlights): technical light that seeks to go unnoticed and let the architecture take the spotlight.
TR Ceiling collection: the reinvented surface fixture
Within the universe of designer ceiling lamps, it is often hard to find surface fixtures that are aesthetically attractive. Our TR Ceiling collection was born to break that stigma. Made from extruded and curved aluminium profile, these pieces stand out for their formal cleanliness and their ability to create compositions by overlapping elements.
TR Ceiling Down and TR Ceiling Up

The TR Ceiling Down model is a circular surface fixture with direct light. Its polycarbonate gel diffuser ensures a homogeneous diffusion, eliminating visible LED dots and creating a perfect disc of light flush to the ceiling. It is ideal for hallways, kitchens or bedrooms where a powerful and uniform general light is required.
On the other hand, the TR Ceiling Up reverses the concept. It is a circular surface fixture with indirect light that washes the ceiling, creating a halo of soft light that visually expands the space and brings a sense of greater height.
The great advantage of the TR Ceiling family is its installation with stems at different heights. This allows the architect to overlap several luminaires (combining direct and indirect light, or different diameters) creating a luminous sculpture against the ceiling, fully customisable in finishes and sizes.
| Feature | TR Ceiling Down | TR Ceiling Up |
| Type of light | Direct (functional) | Indirect (ambient/decorative) |
| Effect | Uniform general lighting | Wash of light on the ceiling, sense of spaciousness |
| Installation | Surface with stems | Surface with stems |
| Customisation | Full (finishes/sizes) | Full (finishes/sizes) |
Technical precision and flexibility: Stick and Focus Line
For the architect looking for optical precision and versatility without hanging cables, designer ceiling lamps of the projector or track type are the ultimate solution.
Stick: minimalism in surface and recessed

The Stick family is an example of how technique meets design.
- Stick (ref. 1110): installed recessed via springs, allowing the remote driver to be placed inside the false ceiling. This lets us see the spot clean and stylised, without any base or visible box on the surface.
- Stick Box (ref. 1111): installed recessed via a standard electrical junction box. It is the ideal solution when we don’t have a false ceiling, allowing the luminaire to be recessed directly into building slabs.
- Recessed: for those looking for the “invisible effect”, the Stick Hole is a recessed spot that hides the light source for maximum visual comfort (low UGR) with the same features, light tone and beam angle as the rest of the Stick collection. It complements projects between recessed fixtures and adjustable projectors, ideal for hotels and luxury residences.
- On track: the Stick Track System 48v lets you integrate this iconic design into low-voltage tracks, combining the mobility of projectors with lines of diffuse light.
Focus Line: versatile ceiling projectors

The Focus Line family offers robust solutions in machined aluminium for direct ceiling or track installation.
- Focus Line: designer ceiling projector designed to use a replaceable GU10 LED bulb. This guarantees project sustainability and makes maintenance easier.
- Focus Line Track: the three-phase track version, perfect for commercial spaces or art galleries where lighting needs to change frequently.
- Focus Line Micro: a 6W mini LED projector with adjustable Fresnel optics, ideal for display cases or very specific architectural details.
Technical solutions for demanding spaces
The bathroom: IP44 on the ceiling
The bathroom ceiling requires luminaires that withstand humidity without sacrificing style. The Focus Line IP 44 lets you bring the aesthetics of a technical projector to the bathroom (Class II), ideal for surface installation on concrete ceilings or where there is no false ceiling, providing safe and elegant accent light.
Spaces with concrete ceilings or beams
In refurbishments where we find exposed ceilings (Catalan vault, concrete, wooden beams) and recessing is not possible, surface designer ceiling lamps are vital. Models such as the Stick Ceiling or the Focus Line allow a clean installation with a surface base. We also highlight the Focus Line Magnet, a solution designed to magnetise the spots directly onto metal beams, respecting the building’s original structure and showcasing the ceiling material through light without invasive interventions.
Customisation: the Insolit signature
What really sets standard designer ceiling lamps apart from a boutique solution is the capacity for customisation. At Insolit, we design and manufacture our own components.
This is crucial in ceiling luminaires such as the TR Ceiling collection, where the architect often needs a specific diameter to fit an existing plaster rosette or to centre the piece in a non-standard hallway. We can manufacture special sizes and finishes in any RAL colour so the surface fixture blends with or contrasts with the architecture according to the design intent.
Experts in designer ceiling lamps
Choosing the right designer ceiling lamps means understanding the upper plane of the space not as a place to hang objects but as a technical and aesthetic surface. Whether through the subtlety of a recessed Stick Hole, the versatility of a Stick Track 48v rail or the sculptural presence of a TR Ceiling surface fixture, at Insolit we offer tools to resolve overhead lighting with architectural rigour.

Frequently asked questions about designer ceiling lamps
What’s the difference between a ceiling fixture and a suspension lamp?
The main difference is the installation and the space they occupy. Suspension lamps hang from cables, taking up vertical volume, while ceiling fixtures (like our TR Ceiling range) are installed flush to the ceiling or with very short rigid stems. Ceiling fixtures are the ideal option for standard ceiling heights (2.40 m – 2.60 m) where a pendant lamp could obstruct passage.
Do you have designer ceiling lamps for concrete ceilings without a suspended ceiling?
Yes, it’s one of our specialities. Models such as the Stick Ceiling, Focus Line or TR Ceiling are surface-mounted, which means they are screwed directly into the slab. They are perfect for renovations where you don’t want to lower the ceiling height by installing plasterboard.
Can Insolit’s LED ceiling fixtures be dimmed?
Yes, the vast majority of our ceiling luminaires are dimmable. We offer different protocols (DALI, 1-10V, Triac or Casambi). For the TR Ceiling fixtures, dimming is especially recommended to be able to switch the atmosphere from a working light to a relaxing ambient light.
What advantage do track projectors have in a home?
Track systems, such as the Stick Track 48v or the Focus Line Track, offer a flexibility that fixed recessed fittings don’t. If you change the layout of the sofa or table, you can move and reorient the spots without having to do any work or make new holes in the ceiling.
Do you offer recessed spotlights that don’t dazzle?
Absolutely. Our Stick Hole model and the Stick recessed range are designed with a “dark light” or deep anti-glare concept. The light source is set back inside, so when you look at the ceiling you don’t see the point of light directly unless you stand right underneath, ensuring maximum visual comfort.
