Les Glories Barcelona

As part of the ambitious redevelopment of the primary entrance points to the Glòries shopping center, the property group commissioned the transformation of the public realm to the iconic designer and artist Javier Mariscal. Central to this new arrival experience was a grand architectural pergola positioned over the main entrance staircases. To breathe life into this structure through illumination, Mariscal collaborated with the acclaimed Lighting Designer Birgit Walter (BWA).

The technical and aesthetic challenge of the project required integrating the luminaires directly within the recessed channels of the structural H-beam steel columns. Furthermore, the lighting concept envisioned a fluid “wave” effect designed to dynamically welcome arriving visitors. Due to the highly specific architectural constraints and control requirements, standard market fixtures were unviable. Birgit Walter approached Insolit to design and manufacture a fully custom lighting solution tailored precisely to the project’s parameters.

Insolit engineered and fabricated a bespoke linear luminaire system, precisely dimensioned to fit flush within the structural steel columns. Each linear module incorporates individually addressable lighting nodes (“pixels”) controlled via DMX, enabling seamless dynamic programming and precise control over light movement sequences. The synergy between Mariscal’s artistic vision, Birgit Walter’s lighting expertise, and Insolit’s custom manufacturing prowess resulted in a landmark installation where bespoke lighting elevates the urban entrance into an immersive experience.
